I possess a confession.? For a long time I have been terrible about doing dishes.? I would eat a meal, and when I was done, the dirty dish might reach the sink.? Dishes typically had a 3 or 4 day journey towards the dishwasher. ?Naturally I’m a pretty clean person, but for nearly 3 decades I’ve been I have been awful about doing the bathroom.
A couple weeks ago, something amazing happened.? I got tired of coping with the dishes.? It wasn’t a conscious decision.? I’d a huge pile of dishes, washed them all, and said no more.? Now I feel this need to make sure they are washed each night before going to sleep.? I don’t understand how long this new found responsibility will last, but I’m optimistic that it is a permanent change.
The Key to Building Good Habits…
Most “experts” will explain that it takes about Thirty days to build a great habit.? That has never made sense to me.? I’ll never understand individuals who feel a “need” to visit a fitness center or run for 30 miles.? Obviously, exercising is healthy, but whether or not the workout becomes “habit” it’s one I’m able to quit anytime I would like.
In my experience, the key to building good habits is getting sick and tired of the alternative.? I got sick of dealing with a huge pile of dishes in my kitchen.? It’s a small thing, however i have spent years coping with the effects of putting them off for a couple of days and now I refuse.
Back to Student Loans…
I think exactly the same concepts affect student loans and private finances in general.? You can easily ignore your loans.? The debts stack up, or even the collection calls roll in, which means you pay just enough to obtain your lender off your back.? Then some time passes and you’re simply within the same mess again.
Clearly, many people don’t pay their student education loans since the decision is about food on the table vs. keeping Sallie Mae happy.? However, for many, lingering education loan troubles are a result of ignoring your financial troubles.? This message is for those who know they can do better, but for whatever reason, they let their debt fester.
The trouble with ignoring debt is that, like the dishes, it continues to accumulate every day.? Interest and additional fees require constant attention or they’ll bury you.
How do you fight?? Decide for good that you are tired of coping with student education loans.? Paying additional fees sucks.? Paying interest sucks.? The only method to fight these demons is to attack them consistently and aggressively.
If you have the financial means to succeed, and you decide that failure is unacceptable, your debt is going to be history before very long.
